President's letter from Brooks Bouldin, April 29, 2007

The May meeting will be at The Chamber of Commerce Building at 6:30 Tuesday the 1st. Our speaker will be Dr. Guy Harrison of Kerrville. Guy has been active in the movement to reestablish Guadalupe Bass in some of their native Central Texas Streams. We hope that Guy will bring Ann Miller, Aquatic Biologist with Texas Parks and Wildlife with him. The Guadalupe Bass is a pure strain that lives only in Central Texas but is threatened by hybridization. Dallas Cassel will tie some rubber legged critters before the meeting.

The club is nearing the end of its second year and the board of directors deems it appropriate to take a look at our bylaws to determine if modifications are in order. A copy of our present bylaws is posted on our web site if you have an interest in reading them. They can be found under "Our Mission". If the Board determines that changes are in order, they will present them to the membership for approval.

Our annual membership meeting will be held at the scheduled time of our regular meeting on the first Tuesday in June at 6:30 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce Building.

Clint Barton has scheduled another fly tying session at the Georgetown Library at 6 p.m. on May 16th. All members who tie or would like to learn how to tie are invited to attend.

This is not a class but beginners can learn about fly tying materials and techniques by watching. We will have classes offered later in the year. If you are interested in joining the classes, contact Clint at 512-868-9148, evenings.

This from Outings chairman Bruce wilks: "The SGFF May outing will be Saturday, May 26, 2007 on the Llano River at the 3404 low water crossing bridge. We can wade both upstream and downstream, with many pools, runs and riffles to fish. There are multiple miles of good wadeable water, so we can spread out and have plenty of room to fish." Go to our web site for a map.

The club will have a booth and give casting demonstrations at the Forth of July Celebration at San Gabriel Park this year. Bob Bruner is looking for volunteers to help man the booth. If you are willing to help, give him a call at 512-930-1123.

I hope we will have good representation at the first conclave of the Gulf Coast Council of the Federation of Fly Fishers in Lake Charles May 18-20. As I mentioned in my letter last month, Lefty Kreh and Nick Curcione will be featured and there will be numerous classes, exhibits and demonstrations to keep you occupied. Also, a Crawfish boil on Friday night and banquet on Saturday with both live and silent auctions. Watch some great fly tiers from around the council and attend a casting clinic.
