South San Gabriel Behind the Hospital

Description

The South Fork of the San Gabriel River can be accessed by the bridge where I35 crosses the river. On the north side of the river and the east side of the highway there is a grassy slope that leads down almost to the river. On the northbound side of I35 the right most lane, as the highway crosses the bridge, is an exit-only lane for the HWY 29 exit. If you are driving north in this exit lane, look for the place where the bridge’s guardrail ends and, immediately past the end of the guardrail, turn right over a low curb onto the grass. Be aware that cars behind you in the exit lane are moving fast and not expecting you to slow almost to a stop and turn onto the grass; take care that you don’t get rear ended! The ground here is generally smooth, free of ruts and large rocks, but the grass is sometimes high enough to obscure the ground in front of your car, so drive carefully. You can drive on the grass, parallel to the highway, down almost to the river’s edge.

At normal flow levels you can wade from here all the way down to Blue Hole, passing under the University Avenue Bridge along the way. You can also fish upstream quite a way before encountering water that is too deep to wade through.
