Gravel Crossing Road at Stillhouse Hollow

Description - Don Johnson

There is a primitive (unpaved) boat ramp and parking area where Gravel Crossing road dead ends into the Lampasses River arm of Stillhouse Hollow. Gravel Crossing road intersects FM 2484 about twelve miles (more or less) west of 2484's junction with I35. The intersection of Gravel Crossing Road and FM 2484 is clearly marked with a small sign; it is easy to find.

At normal lake levels the junction of Stillhouse Hollow's slack water with the Lampasses River's moving water is quite a way upstream from Gravel Crossing. When I was there in February of 2007, Stillhouse Hollow was at 619.7 ft. (conservation pool is 622 ft.), and it took me about one hour to paddle my canoe (I am old and slow - a young kayaker would be much quicker) up to the first riffle that caused my canoe to drag bottom. For about two thirds of this way I felt like I was still in the lake and not yet in the river.

I talked to some local fishermen who said that the area just below this first riffle, and for a few hundred yards down stream, is good for white bass during the spring run. I have also talked with bank fishermen who say that whites can be caught right in the area of the primitive boat ramp. I don't know what fishing is like during the rest of the year, but I bet the river above the riffle doesn't get fished much because the riffle stops power boats and the river access upstream is limited.
